As
part of policies to countermeasure global warming, the Japanese Ministry of Economy,
Trade and Industry (METI) has been taking the lead in guiding and enhancing the
technological capabilities of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) thus far.
Together with
the so-called “Carbon Credit System”, which is being widely accepted
by corporations due
to the fact that CO2 can be reduced while profit is gained
from credit sales. As a result,
in the long run, the method is expected to
strike an efficient balance between economy
and environment within the
corporations. Oita Prefecture extended invitations to both
experts and practitioners in the field to meet and as of last year (2010), the “Oita Prefecture
Domestic Carbon Credit Utility Promotion Committee” was established for the purposes of
enlightenment
and promotion of domestic carbon credit system. Currently, there is an increase
in acquisitions of carbon credit cases domestically. However, the handling of
the promised
second stage carbon credit is still uncertain, thus, causing a
slow down in the implementation
within the industry. As such, for future
developments in the said activities, namely, Carbon Credit,
it was thought that
adding international viewpoints here on to the prefectural ones would only be
timely. It is therefore our hope and desire that
active discussions based on international perspectives
regarding the future
of Carbon Credit could be held during
the session within the Annual Conference
of the International Association of
Asia Pacific Studies. Please feel free to participate and air your
views and
opinions.
